Dr. Narciso D. Monfort, MD.

Dr Narciso D. Monfort, founding president of the Monfort Foundation, Inc. and the Prayer Warriors of the Holy Souls, passed away peacefully last Monday, September 5, 2005, after receiving the last rites at his home in Wack-Wack Village, Mandaluyong City, Philippines. He died in the company of his wife, Chita G. Monfort, Executive Director of the PRAYER WARRIORS of the HOLY SOULS, children Joey and Tisha Monfort, Mitch and Lakan Bautista, and grandson Sebastien Christophe Monfort.

PWHS Spiritual Director Fr. Jojo Zerrudo was able to administer to him the last rites which included giving him Holy Communion a few hours before he breathed his last.

Dr. Monfort died after almost a year-long bout with mylofibrosis, a bone-marrow disorder, coupled with complications due to diabetes and pneumonia.

It will be remembered that 13 years ago, then Congressman Narciso D. Monfort of the 4th District of Iloilo, organized the PRAYER WARRIORS of the HOLY SOULS. He did this after reading the booklet "Read Me or Rue It". Together with his wife, Chita G. Monfort, they established the MONFORT FOUNDATION, INC. to ensure that the apostolate would be properly organized and structured under the auspices of a foundation.

What started as a personal devotion, has now grown into a global apostolate with about 21,000 members in 49 countries.

The remains of Dr. Monfort were flown to his birthplace and hometown in Dumangas, Iloilo after a 2-day wake at the Santuario de San Jose, Greenhills. A big crowd welcomed him at the Iloilo I City airport, and a 300-car convoy that spanned three kilometers escorted him to the PURIFICACION D. MONFORT COLLEGE Multi-Purpose Hall, in Brgy. P.D. Monfort North. Along the way, more mourners lined the streets with lighted candles, throwing flowers as the car bearing his remains passed them by. Placards with personal "thank you" messages scrawled on them were instantly prepared, and even make-shift altars with crucifix, candles and flowers were set up in front of homes where the convoy passed. The out-pouring of love from people whose lives were touched by the good congressman was just overwhelming.

The 3-day vigil that followed had a steady stream of people from all walks of life, paying their last respects to a man, some of whom had considered as their patron and "godfather".

Masses were celebrated voluntarily by priests he had helped in the past. He did this by improving or repairing the churches where they were assigned or by just plain helping them out in their parish-based projects.

No less than His Excellency, Archbishop Angel Lagdameo of the Archdiocese of Iloilo and incoming president of the CBCP celebrated mass for him the day before he was buried. He lauded the help extended by Dr. Monfort not only to his constituents, but also to the souls in purgatory who have benefited from the apostolate that was espoused by him

Dr. Monfort was buried at the Monfort Mausoleum in the St. Isidore Parish Cemetery last Sunday, September 11, 2005 after the Necrological Services led by Iloilo Governor Niel Tupas and the concelebrated Mass of the Resurrection. Thousands of his constituents and town mates accompanied him to his final resting place.
