Fr. Paul O’Sullivan, the author of the in-demand booklet "Read Me or Rue It," wrote another booklet entitled "The Wonders of the Mass." In the first booklet, he has provided the reader the reasons why it is incumbent on the part of the faithful to pray, assist and offer masses, and do acts of mercy for the intentions of the holy souls. In the second booklet, he describes the importance of the holy sacrifice of the mass, its benefits and how "all the labors and works of a day or a week or a whole year are nothing in comparison with the value of one mass."
While it may be good to offer masses (where one may contact a priest for these intentions), what is even better is to attend mass on a daily basis for the intentions of the holy souls. This way both the person attending mass and the souls benefit from the merits of this daily mass.
It is also said that the benefits gained while attending mass during one’s lifetime, far exceed the benefits of mass offered when one is dead already. So it is good to build these "mansions in heaven" while one is alive, than wait when one is already dead and masses are offered for the dead.
It is in this light that the PWHS members are enjoined to make going to mass a daily habit. It is both for one’s self-sanctification, as well as for the relief of the souls in purgatory – the very essence of the apostolate of the PWHS.
Holy Hour Pledge
![]() |
PWHS members are encouraged to spend some time in front of the Blessed Sacrament, depending on the time that they can spare in praying for the holy souls. A favorite passage of the "defenders" of the principle of the need to pray for the dear departed is found in 2Macc. 12:46: "It is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins."
While one can actually pray for the holy souls anywhere and anytime, doing so in front of the Blessed Sacrament with the main thought of releasing souls from the pains of Purgatory is such an effective way of helping the holy souls.
A campaign is on-going amongst PWHS members to ask for pledges to spend more time doing the holy hour for the holy souls. Join in the campaign to have round-the-clock prayers for our dear departed.
